ENT FAQs

What is ear wax?

The ear canal is lined with hair follicles and glands that produce cerumen, a waxy oil. Usually, the wax is found at the ear’s opening and falls out or can be removed by washing. Excessive wax can block the ear canal and lead to hearing loss. But an adequate quantity of wax is essential to trap and prevent dust, bacteria, etc., from entering the ears and protecting the ear canal’s delicate skin from irritation when the water is in the canal.

How to clean ear wax?

Ears are capable of cleaning themselves regularly. Hence, ear wax does not have to be cleaned. Doctors are against inserting any object in the ear, considering the various delicate parts in the ear. The only reason you must clean your ear wax is to soften or remove ear wax from the outside of the ear canals.

If you want to clean excess wax from the ear, you must consult an ENT specialist, who would prescribe OTC wax dissolving drops for about three to four days.

Excessive sneezing and a runny nose, especially in the morning or anytime during the day – is it a sinus infection?

No. Excessive sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes could typically be symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It is a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction of a body to multiple allergens like dust mites, pollen grains, animal dander, etc. Ideally, one should avoid allergens by doing allergy testing. However, practically that might not be necessarily possible. Thus, you must consult an ENT specialist and keep the symptoms under check through medicines and topical nasal sprays.

Can every giddiness be labelled vertigo? Who should you consult – a neurologist/physician/ENT specialist?

No, you cannot term every giddiness vertigo. Vertigo is a typical feeling or sensation of rotation (either of self or that of the surrounding). It is of two types – peripheral and central. Often (about 80-85 percent cases), patients must seek consultation from an ENT specialist for peripheral vertigo. In the remaining cases, they can get a neurologist’s opinion.

Can vertigo be treated?

Yes. You don’t have to take medicines for years. Knowing the exact cause of vertigo can help you identify a permanent cure for it.

What is the treatment for old-age-related hearing loss?

Old-age-related hearing loss is termed presbycusis. A hearing aid trial is the only treatment for this condition.

Is there any remedy for tinnitus?

No. But the doctors may prescribe some drugs that can reduce the intensity and severity of the symptoms. But that too has been effective only in a small number of patients.

Does nasal septum regrow after DNS surgery?

It depends on the age at which surgery is performed. If the operation is performed at a young age (for instance, at an age less than 21), then the active growth cycle results in recurrence. Hence, ideally, nasal septum surgery must be performed after 21-25 years of age.

Can eardrum repair surgery (tympanoplasty) be performed on a wet ear?

Ideally, it should be performed on a dry ear. It is because there is a high chance of graft rejection and failure of surgery if performed on a wet ear.

What is the cause of ear discharge in newborn babies?

While being breastfed or while drinking milk through a bottle, the child is in a sleeping position. That itself is the most common cause of Asom in newborn babies. The reason behind it is the short and straight eustachian tube in babies. Hence, the mother must always feed the baby in a sitting position.
