Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to kill or shrink cancer cells. Charged particles, x-rays and gamma rays are radiations used for killing the cancer cells. The radiation therapy can be given through an external beam, (using a machine called a linear accelerator) or internally (brachytherapy).
The Radiation Oncology Department at M.N. Budhrani Cancer Institute, Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital is a forerunner in the field of cancer Treatment, research and education. Radiation Oncology Department was started on November 24th, 1995 with Theratron 780C Cobalt Machine and upgraded with Varian Ximatron Planning Simulator, Varian Clinac 2300CD Dual energy linac and Nucletron Ir-192 HDR Brachytherapy machine in 1997. Till date 20000 Cancer patients have been treated with Radiotherapy. Department is running D.N.B. Radiotherapy Teaching program from 2011 and till date many students have passed, and many students are studying.
